Introducing the New Missal that will come into effect on the First Sunday of Advent:  To assist our preparation for changes in some of the words that we pray at Mass please see the question and answer below.  In addition you may wish to view the brief video and further explanations which are now available on www.catholicbishops.ie.  Related topics on the new edition of the
Roman Missal are also on www.liturgy-ireland.ie.

When and why are we getting a new edition of the Roman Missal?
The new edition of the Missal will come into full use over a period of time between September and 27th November 2011, the First Sunday of Advent.  The new edition is necessary for a number of reasons.  First, in the years since 1975 when our current Missal was published, a number of additional texts have been made available for use in the Mass.  These include additional Eucharistic Prayers, some new Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Masses for over twenty new Feasts of Saints (for example, St. Pius of Pietreicina, Padre Pio, Edit Stein, Maximilian Kolbe).  The new material is to be included in the Missal so that it can be used in our celebrations.
Secondly, in 2001 the Holy See issued new directives for the translation of the Latin texts.  Translators were asked to make the English text follow more closely the original Latin in its wording and structure.  They were also asked to strengthen the biblical language and images in the texts and to reintroduce some theological vocabulary that may have been lost over the years.
Across the English speaking world the new edition of the Roman Missal will therefore contain both new material and a new style of translation.

Reflection

The bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world

Isn't the greatest gift
one can give to another,
the gift of oneself?

Gifts can be sent in the post,
credited and impersonally given;
a gift can be chosen quickly or with care,
the gift expressing the giver's personality
or the relationship between two people
is most welcomed.

That's the gift of the Eucharist;
The bread that I shall give is my flesh,
for the life of the world.

This means, it is myself.

When I give my time and listen,
when I share my experience,
or speak from the heart,
or risk opening myself
that another person may grow,
then I am giving myself,
and this is what Jesus does.

He allows us into the hidden heart of his life:
his relationship with his Father,
his real beliefs about love and justice,
peace and religion, life and death;
his hopes for the poor,
his conviction to suffer and die
for God and for us.

He breaks the joys and sorrows of his life,
he invites his disciples and friends -
you and me -
to share our love
for the life and growth,
the encouragement and development
of those with whom we share our lives.

The bread that I shall give
is my flesh for the life of the world.
