We must allow God’s word to judge and challenge us—bishop
Both the Church and society are suffering today from the harm caused by gross distortions and the rejection of Catholic teaching over the past 40 years, an Irish bishop based in the UK has warned.
“The idea of obedience and humility toward God’s truth are totally alien to many people in this age of assertive individualism,” said Bishop Patrick O’Donoghue.
Critical of a lack of courage in bishops and Catholic leaders he stated: “If we fail in our duty of presenting the truths of the faith, not only the Church but also wider society, suffers.”
In an interview with Zenit newsagency, the Bishop of Lancaster argued that “the principal challenge, from which many of the other challenges spring, is the rejection of obedience in the Church.”
Modern view of evil a source of despair, says Benedict
The modern denial of original sin and various attempts to use evolution to explain the presence of evil in the world only lead to deep despair, according to Pope Benedict XVI.
In this view without hope, said Benedict, “a mixture of good and evil belongs to the very fabric of being.” Evil, then, “is invincible. In the end, only self-interest matters. And every step forward must necessarily be paid for with a river of evil.”
Continuing his weekly talks on St Paul, the Pope discussed the Church’s teaching on original sin, noting that “the essential lines of the doctrine” were set out by the Apostle to the Gentiles.
